Air Conditioner Repair: Water Leak at Indoor Unit - The Causes and Solutions

Air conditioners remove moisture from the air to provide the cooling effect in the room. A lot of water is created during this process, the amount of which depends on humidity in the air, efficiency and the size of the air conditioner and the method of its installation. Water leak in the air conditioner is a common problem and the same can be fixed by a trained ac repair mechanic correctly.

The incorrect positioning of the window air conditioner can cause water leak from it. It must be slightly lower at the rear than the front. If it is installed too low at front the water will flow into the room.

If warm air enters the air conditioner, condensation will occur due to mixing with cooler air. Small water droplets under front edge of base shows an air leakage problem.

The split air conditioners basically have an indoor part consisting of cooling coils and a blower fan. Water around the indoor unit is an indication that something is leaking or dripping inside. There may be many reasons for this situation but any serious problems may require service by a trained HVAC repair technician.

In the cooling mode moisture in the air will condense on the indoor evaporator coil and suction line of the air conditioner. If the black insulation is missing or if it has open seams, this may cause dripping. If the cause of water leak is this dripping, it can be easily fixed.

During summer, the evaporator produces a lot of water. This water running down the evaporator coil drips on to a drip tray or pan having an outlet that connects to the domestic drainage or anywhere outside. If dirt accumulates on the coil, the water, instead of running down the coil, will hit the dirt and then drip onto the floor.

When the outside temperature is too cold, especially during the end of the cooling season, the cooling coil may ice up in the night. There may not be any leakage at bedtime, but water may be there in front of the machine in morning.

How do you stop a water leak in your indoor unit?

Often, the home owner can try some temporary solution to stop water leaking at the indoor unit. However, an expert HVAC technician can fix the problem permanently. With this in mind, it's recommended that you simply contact an HVAC service provider, such as Jeff Fante's Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning to repair these kinds of problems. Don't risk creating more damage.
